What began as a clever way for founder
David Dixon to stock his jukebox-for-hire
company with 1950s and 60s 45s has
survived five decades of digital disruption,
music format wars and suburban shifts.
Today, Dixon Recycled Records remains a
beloved Melbourne record-buying institution,
operating its spacious flagship store at 100 Railway Road, Blackburn and its bustling
north-side location at 237 High Street, Northcote. Over the last half-century, the iconic
red-and-black storefronts have also been part of music history across various Melbourne
suburbs, including Fitzroy, Prahran, Dandenong and Camberwell.

 

Long-time Blackburn store manager Douglas Walsh, who has spent nearly 40 years behind
the counter, credits the store’s longevity to Melbourne’s fiercely loyal community of
collectors.
“Although Dixons is independent in name, we're dependent on the public to consistently
supply us with the best used collections of music... many of the customers who started
shopping at the first Dixons in 1976 are still with us today,”

After 50 years, that relationship between the store and its customers remains at the heart of
Dixons — a business built on the simple proposition that there is always another record to
discover.
